Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award 2010 for Individuals and Organizations

The Korean-based May 18 Memorial Foundation starts accepting nominations for the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award 2010 from the month of November onwards every year. The award is given out of an individual or an organizations making contribution towards the “promotion and advancement of human rights, democracy and peace in their work.” Nominations should be made by others (self-nominations are not accepted). The nominee should be active in the field of peace, democracy andhuman rights either in Korea or in another country. The aims of the award are:

1)    to enhance the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising by rewarding individuals, groups or institutions in Korea and abroad for their contribution to improvinghuman rights and peace throughout the world; and
2)    to recognize individuals, groups and institutions in Korea and/or abroad who are promoting the goals of the May 18 Democratic Uprising as a movement toward unification and cooperation.
The award carries a cash prize of 50 million Korean Won which can be used by the laureate to fund his or her own activities in the field. In addition to the grant, there is also a gold medal and a certificate. The award will be given out on 18 May 2010, celebrated as the 30th Anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising in the Republic of Korea. Nominations have to be made using the form available at the May 18 Memorial Foundation’s website and all supporting documents have to be attached as listed out. The Foundation is also accepting applications for its International Internship Program 2010 from young persons who are University graduates, below the age of 30 years and have a minimum of three years work experience in an NGO or social development. The internship requires the intern to stay and work in Korea for a period of 10 months starting March 2010. Travel costs, airfare and living expenses will be covered by the Foundation.
